When you claim Medicare through HaltH, the client always pays the full fee. Medicare then pays the rebate back to the client directly. HaltH sends the Medicare claim in the same transaction, so you don't need a separate step.
How it works
Example: your consultation fee is $125 and the Medicare rebate is $63.40.
The client pays the full $125 to your clinic with HaltH Tap.
HaltH sends the Medicare claim automatically when the payment goes through.
Medicare pays the $63.40 rebate straight into the client's bank account. This can take up to 5 business days.
After the rebate, the client has paid $61.60 themselves (the gap).
Why doesn't the total go down when I add Medicare? Because the client always pays the full fee at checkout. The rebate goes to the client from Medicare, not to your clinic, so it isn't taken off what you charge.
Before you start
The provider is registered for Medicare in HaltH (see Medicare onboarding with HaltH).
The booking uses a Medicare-eligible appointment type.
You have the client's Medicare card details and a valid referral.
The client has bank details registered with Medicare (through myGov or the Medicare app). Medicare pays the rebate to this account.
Steps in the HaltH app
Open the booking in the HaltH app, or use Send to Tap from your practice software.
Tap Pay.
Tap Add funding, then choose Medicare.
Pick a saved Medicare card or add a new one.
Add the referring provider. Choose a saved referral or add a new one.
Check the total. It shows the full fee (for example $125), along with the expected Medicare rebate.
Choose Tap to Pay as the payment method.
Ask the client to hold their card or phone near the top of your phone until the payment goes through.
And that's it. HaltH sends the client their receipt automatically, the claim goes to Medicare automatically, and you can check its status on the booking.
Good to know
The HaltH transaction fee is 2% of the full amount the client pays ($125 in the example), not only the gap.
If a claim fails, open the booking and resubmit it. You don't need to start over.
If you already took payment without adding Medicare, you can still submit the claim from the booking afterwards. The client can also claim the rebate themselves online.
Seeing an "invalid item code" error? Change the booking to a Medicare appointment type.
